ISO 21469 – Focus on product responsibility

ISO 21469 is the first international standard for lubricants used in the production of food and beverage products. The certification programme is currently the most comprehensive one for H1 food machinery lubricants, ensuring unambiguous hygiene requirements in the formulation and manufacturing process of H1 Lubricants. Klüber Lubrication was one of the first companies in Europe, and the first in North America, to be certified according to ISO 21469.

Under ISO 21469, the lubrication issue is considered as a whole, and the lubricant manufacturer is assessed accordingly: not only the lubricant and its ingredients are taken into account, but also the way the lubricant is made, handled, packed and stored. This ensures that the lubricant, for example, does not come into contact with other substances such as cleaning agents or other foreign materials. Even the packaging is subjected to review; the advantage: cleanly produced, high-quality speciality lubricants produced in a hygienic environment that deliver real production advantages.

Since ISO 21469 covers the whole life cycle of the lubricant, the lubricant manufacturer is also required to analyse the hygiene aspects that arise from handling a lubrication product, and to advise the user accordingly. “We can and do offer consulting and support that goes far beyond the normal scope of product recommendation – this includes the safe use, handling and storage of lubricants. Ensuring the right amount of lubricant is used minimises excess lubrication risks to food safety”, states Paolo Spolaore, Global Market Manager Food Industry at Klüber Lubrication.
