Mountains, beer and the art of brewing

Switzerland has a reputation for quality, precision and a first-class style of living, all characteristics that play a key role at Feldschlösschen, the largest and one of the oldest breweries in the country. This is why the brewery relies on the Endress+Hauser food safety concept and the highly-precise Promag H flowmeter, which in addition to flow, also measures the conductivity in liquids, thus contributing to product quality.

Between tradition and innovation 

Feldschlösschen Original,” a lager beer, is brewed in Rheinfeld near the German border in a castle that serves as the brewery’s production facility. Lager beer is highly popular in Switzerland, making it an important source of revenue for the company. Apart from traditional beer products, Feldschlösschen also offers innovative creations, something that is evident by the wide assortment of more than 40 beers and beer-based beverages. Carrying such a large assortment means frequent product changeovers, which in turn means frequent CIP cleaning cycles that have to be reliably monitored and controlled. This is a typical application for the Promag H, which is optimized for the food industry.

 

Conductivity measurements for higher food product safety 

Feldschlösschen has placed its trust in Endress+Hauser for its measurement technology for many years. As part of the close cooperation between the two companies, the Promag H electromagnetic flowmeter with integrated conductivity measurements was tested over a period of 12 months. The strengths of the conductivity measurements are especially apparent in systems that undergo CIP cleaning, since subsequent production processes have to be checked for cleaning residues. The advantage of the Promag H is that it not only discerns the difference between beer and cleaning solutions, but reliably detects smaller amounts of cleaning solution residues.

 

Because the instrument performed so well during the field test, Feldschlösschen decided to add the optional integrated temperature sensor to each new Promag H electromagnetic flowmeter that it orders. That means the instrument directly compensates for the temperature when measuring conductivity and outputting the result. 

 

The temperature measurement offers the possibility to counterbalance the factory default conductivity measurement using reference conditions so that comparable measurements can be generated. By employing the integrated temperature sensor, Feldschlösschen minimizes the number of additional measurement points in the piping systems that run through hygienically-sensitive areas of the operation. It was these factors that persuaded Feldschlösschen to deploy the Promag H at its brewery in Rheinfeld.

The benefits of additional measurement parameters 

Measuring conductivity in flow measurement instruments translates into increased product safety and consistently high quality. After all, if cleaning solutions or other harmful substances inadvertently find their way into food products, only to be discovered after delivery to the customer, this places food manufacturers under immense pressure. This can result in costly recall campaigns and damage to the manufacturer’s reputation, leading to a loss in customer trust and a corresponding loss in revenues. Quality assurance is thus the top priority for the food and beverage industry.

Another application at Feldschlösschen involves detecting the phase separation between the actual beer product and water. Feldschlösschen transports beer, such as Feldschlösschen Hopfen, from the storage tank to the filtration system using a pump. The product is then expelled from the storage tank with water. Using the conductivity and flow measurement values, the previously manual phase separation process between water and beer can be safely automated and controlled. This saves time and conserves resources.

Time savings through standardization 

“The integrated temperature and conductivity measurements make our processes more transparent,” says Benjamin Röttel, B&P Project Manager / CSC Local Technical Expert at Feldschlösschen. Furthermore, the measurement instrumentation was standardized, which in turn significantly simplifies the storage and management of spare parts and maintenance. “The time savings has freed up more capacity,” says Röttel, which means he and his colleagues have more time for other tasks. The 

 

Promag H 300 instruments are also equipped with a WiFi module, an optional feature in the new Proline 300 or Proline 500 electronic line of instruments. The instruments can now be easily and quickly operated and configured with a laptop, tablet or smartphone. This is especially advantageous with measurement points located in difficult-to-access areas of the plant, because they can be easily configured and read-out via the simple web interface. All that’s required is a conventional web browser without additional software.
